Top Ten things to do in February
- If you love collards…now that we have had some cold weather its time to throw a few seeds into some tossed up soil and they should take and sprout. I have tried to plant them sooner but they like the cold!
- It’s time to go to the local shelter and see if anyone needs jackets, or toiletries. Lot’s of people give at the end of the year but by now the supplies are depleted.
- Gather the children and ask then to go through their own rooms if they are able to. Keeping up with the organizing so their spaces are readied for spring. In fact, I would go ahead and pull the curtains and bed spreads and take to be cleaned as well.
- Plan the activities that you want to do during spring break. If you have not booked the trip its still not too late to get some last minute deals. Having planned the activities prior to departure makes enjoying the trip so much easier.
- Invite a few friends over for tea and some brunch. Take time to listen to their lives and be in the moment with them.
- On my nightside table now… “Vincent and Theo” The Van Gogh Brothers by Deborah Heiligman and “All the Ugly and Wonderful Things” by Bryn Greenwood.
- Cook up a beautiful Valentines supper. My Garlicky Green beans is always a favorite!
- Go purchase some violets and orchids for the house. This time of year it’s always nice to look down and see a beautiful little blossom during the winter months. That always makes me smile!
- Go to The Museum of Fine Arts and check out the exhibit “Bestowing Beauty: Masterpieces from Persian Lands.” ( Hurry though it ends mid-month) Have the children take their sketchbooks and pick their favorite pieces to sketch. They might become inspired to take a pottery class too!
- Spend an afternoon with the children reading books or from them. Make a list of the classics and give them the gift of imagination from great literary works. Start with “Alice in Wonderland”or “Huckleberry Finn.”

Starters: The Grazing Plate
The fruits featuring: Prosciutto wrapped cantaloupe slices, fresh figs, raspberries, strawberries, apples, grapes
The vegetables featuring: cucumbers, carrots and sliced red peppers
The Crackers featuring: toasted baguettes, and various crackers
The meats and cheeses featuring: sopresata, apricot cheese, my famous veggie dip, and a block of both brie and blue
The Main course
Freshly Baked Bread with Fresh Basil Herbed Creamed Butter
Coo Au Vin
(Braised chicken in a rich broth)
Heart shaped Beets and Potatoes roasted with fresh herbs
Oven roasted Garlicky Green Beans
Strawberry cheesecake bites and Valentines Crack
Chocolate ice cream
Garlicky Green Beans
One packet of green beans
2 Tbsp of extra virgin olive oil
3 cloves of garlic chopped finely
salt and pepper to taste
Place the green beans, and garlic in a shallow pan
sprinkle with salt and pepper and drizzle with the olive oil
Bake in the oven at 350 for 20 mins flipping frequently
